This is a damaged example of a coin that appears to have had an eventful existence. A gilded medieval silver halfpenny of Richard II (AD 1377-1399); Withers Type I (North 1331b); mint: London. The coin is now broken in two and probably folded in half prior to breaking. The coin has been gilded and its use has therefore been altered, possibly for a token or keepsake and therefore would qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Act. There is no evidence for a mount or of attempts at piercing, which suggests that the object was not intended to be a pendant. Interestingly another example of a gilded Richard II halfpenny has been recorded on this database (ESS-642…

A contemporary copy of a quarter guinea of George III (AD 1760-1820), minted in c. AD 1762. The coin is made of silver and would have been gold plated, although none of this now survives. Quarter guineas were only minted in AD 1762, so the copies must date either to this exact year or soon after. This example may have been struck by hand rather than being milled as it is slightly irregular and thinner than original examples.

A post medieval silver threepence of Charles II dating to c.1664-70. This has been gilded and pierced at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse. Clearly the intention was that the coin might serve as a pendant. The display of the king's head in this way may well also have had an ideological element. This adaptation of the coin would, in all probability, have been carried out shortly after the coin's issue. Coin issued c.1664-70, adaptation in the late 1660s or 1670s. 18mm diameter, weight 1.38g.

A silver penny of Edward the Confessor, Expanding Cross (heavy coinage) type of the moneyer Beorhtsige, c.1050-1053 AD. The coin has been modified with the addition of gilding on the reverse and damage at the centre of the obverse flan, probably indicating re-use as a coin brooch or similar object. This coin was found in c.1982 and therefore does not qualify as treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act. As North, 1975: no. 823, Dr. M. Allen (Fitzwilliam Museum, pers. comm.) notes that this coin is from the same reverse dies as SCBI 6 no. 686.

An unusual gold coloured post medieval coin. In appearance, this is a post medieval three-halfpence coin of Elizabeth I, minted in London. The mintmark is an eglantine and the coin date is 157(3). This coin is only listed as being minted in silver but this example appears to have been gilded or coloured gold. Barrie Cook of the British Museum says: "Shakespeare mentions 'gilded twopences', whereby halfgroats could pass muster as half-crowns if you didn't look too closely. I assume something similar is going on here." The coin is in good condition. It measures 17mm x 16.2mm x 0.5mm, we…

Silver penny of Edward I which has been gilded and made into a brooch. A Class 1c penny of 1279. The reverse is gilded and the obverse has a hook piece soldered to it (following the line if the long cross on the reverse). The hook is made from a trapezoidal sectioned strip of silver. At one end it is bent over to form a loop (possibly for attachment) and at the other it is bent backwards to form a hook. The end of the hook tapers slightly before a break at the end. The coin is in good condition and was probably converted to a dress accessory quite soon after it was minted. Potential t…

Incomplete silver penny of Edward I, Mint London, Class 2b January - May 1280. The penny has been reused to form a brooch with a small silver loop being soldered to the obverse face. It has been applied in such a way that the cross on the reverse is vertical. It is possible that the front face has also been gilt (although this may be a result of the burial conditions). The lower part of thE coin has been lost - probably as a result of movement in the soil.
