Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a cast copper alloy leg from a medieval or early post-medieval cauldron or skillet. The leg, which would have been one of three on a single vessel, has a flattish D-shaped base, part of which has worn away. It measures 82.10mm in length, 41.68mm wide, 19.90mm thick at the widest point and weighs 167.95g. It curves gradually from the base and there is a hint of the former vertical ridge which would have run up the centre of the front. The object is very worn and parts of the surface are quite pitted.

Pottery sherd from the base of a large substantial thin walled storage jar or jug probably dating from the later medieval period (1450 - 1600 AD). The fabric of the sherd is relatively hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and broken burnt pottery inclusions. The fabric also contains a large amount of sand like grains. The fabric colour is mid grey. The inner surface of the pottery is a mottled light orange brown and the outer surface mid beige brown. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of early pottery.…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a broken cast copper alloy sword belt fitting dating from the sixteenth or seventeenth century. Less than half of the fitting survives, consisting of part of the plate with one suspension loop (which would have been fitted to a belt) and part of one hook, which is attached to the suspension loop. The hook would have been fitted onto the scabbard straps for a sword. It appears that on this example, the plate would have originally three suspension loops. The surviving part of the plate is curvilinear, 27.46mm long by 23.37 wide by 2.25mm thick, with cast scrolled foliage decorati…
