A silver huntsman's whistle of 16th century date. The whistle has been cut from silver sheet, rolled and soldered together. The whistle has three distinct elements: the mouthpiece, the body, and the open end. These are separated by discoidal collars soldered on to the body. These collars were made by a length of silver wire through smaller silver wire hoops. clearly visible due to damage in one section of the collar near the open end. An incomplete Post-Medieval silver "bosun's" whistle. Treasure case 2015 T412. The object is oval or egg-shaped and is hollow. Each end of the object is decorated with an openwork sexfoil with a raised central pellet, possibly representing a flower. The two hemispheres of the object are conjoined by a raised ridge decorated by two grooves. The ridge measures 3.15mm in width. The object has a large perforation through the median ridge measuring 5.67mm in diameter. The whistle is in the form of steam locomotive comprising a cylindrical boiler, open at the boiler door end and narrowing at the cab end to form the D-shaped blow hole. An incomplete cast lead-alloy whistle of late Post-Medieval date, circa AD 1750 -1900. The whistle is in the form of a pipe bowl which is sub-conical with a hollow interior and a short circular projecting stem. The opening of the bowl is broken and worn, as is the stem. The surface of the bowl is decorated with irregularly spaced raised pellets and a faint casting line is present on the longitudinal axis. The metal has a mid-brown Patina and is worn. An incomplete cast pewter whistle of late post-medieval date, c.AD 1700 - 1900. The body of the whistle is hollow and tubular with an extended section to the top hemisphere. An incomplete silver whistle made from silver sheet, somewhat flattened at one end. The mouthpiece is intact, shaped for blowing, being D shaped in section with a separate piece fixed underneath producing a curved underside expanding to a circular sectioned tube. There is a sound slit half way along the top of the whistle. This is distorted but relatively undamaged. There are the remains of a maker's mark just above slit between it and the mouthpiece. The stone from which the whetstone has been carved is a fine-grained Mica Schist, sourced in Scandinavia. The stone has been chipped and ground into the whetstone shape and has large chamfered edges. A complete whetstone probably dating to the early-medieval period. The whetstone is rectilinear in plan and relatively square in section. One end narrows slightly, each end is angled slightly, parallel to each other. The stone is a fine-grained, micaceous rock, probably schistose in origin. There appears to be no garnet present or clear schistoze texture which has been clearly apparent in nearly all of the other whetstone seen through the Yorkshire FLO office. A stone hone of unknown date. The sub-rectangular hone is slightly waisted in the centre and is probably incomplete. It is made from a brown hard mud or siltstone with fine grains and is smooth to touch. The sides of the hone have silvery inclusions and black markings that are not present on the front or back face. The hone tapers in thickness at one end and has a circular perforation (diameter is 5.5mm) that has been drilled from both faces. A cone shaped stone with 3 sides having flat surfaces that have been smoothed by wear, and show evidence of being used for sharpening blades. The back is slightly concave and rougher. An incomplete whetstone of probableEarly-Medieval date. The stone is cylindrical in profile and circular in section constructed from a fine grained sandstone with a high mica component. One end of the object appears to terminate in an old break, all other surfaces are smoothed. While this form of whetstone is fairly ubiquitous throughout history its association with securely dated Early-Medieval material would suggest a comparable date for this example.
