Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large and almost complete adze, of triangular cross section, in rolled condition. The flint has patinated a dark brown colour with the coarse inclusions now a lighter brown, the edges have crumbled due to the flint re-corticating and turning chalky underneath the brown patination, showing as a white grainular surface. The damage to the cutting edge shows the core of the flint is still intact under the thick chalky degradation and a patch of good quality dark grey flint inside. The flint was likely to have been this colour and condition when the adze was knapped to shape. The flake sc…

The largest black flake is hard hammer struck with a pronounced bulb of percussion. The rest are soft hammer struck, narrow blades of suggested Mesolithic to early Neolithic date c. 9000-3300BC.  Two cores were f…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Nearly complete Mesolithic sub-triangular sectioned adze of red, grey and orange mottled patinated flint. A recent chip on one edge at the mid-point reveals that the flint was originally mid-grey in colour. There is a patch of whitish cortex on the dorsal face at the butt. All flake scars are hard or semi-hard hammer struck, and care has been taken to produce a (still) sharp cutting edge. A very colourful and well-made example. 158 x 47 x 27.5mm.

Previously recorded in 2009 (P.A.R. ident 12/11/09) Record states: Mesolithic adze/axe? dimentions 99 x 37 x 26 mm. Rod-shaped artifact, with sub-triangular section, in glossy brown flint, flaked on all faces. One end is abrupt, with some evidence of battering, and has a small area of cortex on one face; the other is broken in antiquity, with a hinged fracture. Most probably this is a broken Mesolithic axe or adze which has snapped in use with the loss of the cutting edge. It appears that this has been recorded before in June 1990: NHER 37232 (originally NHER 28435) Found or recorded …

The surface of the flint is very clear and is not covered by any white patina associated with recortication. However, there is an area of cortex remaining on the flint. The object has a sub-conical shape. It is most likely an example of a conical bladelet core. There is a single striking platform, which serves as the flat base of the cone-like object. There is also a single flaking surface that wraps around the remaind…
