Two glass wine bottle fragments. Blueish and greenish iridescent shards, probably from the bases of two wine or champagne bottles with pronounced punts; one from the edge of the base, and the other probably from the side of the punt. Both fragments are decayed to a similar degree, suggesting them to be broadly contemporary, and having shared a similar burial environment. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Weight: 46.69gms.

Glass wine bottle. Shard from the basal punt of a wine or champagne bottle. The glass, of a green tint, shows iridescence from its decay. This extends over fracture surfaces, suggesting the object was broken at or shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1850. Weight: 29.30gms.

Green translucent glass bottle fragment. Moulded oval-ended base of a punt from a wine or champagne bottle, with distinctive golden iridescence on the external surface and across fracture surfaces, but eroded from the inner surface. The glass lacks discernible bubbles within the metal, and is therefore likely to be an industrial product of relatively recent date. The identification arises from the slight return of the angle of the punt, visible at its edges. The use of tinted glass was particularly important to retain the colour of red wines, while a punt helped collect sediment so cl…

Dark [probably] green glass with all surfaces coated with golden iridescent decay products; wine bottle fragment. A small shard from the basal punt of a large [with an estimated basal diameter probably exceeding 200mm] wine or champagne bottle, presumably broken in antiquity. A small fragment from the base of a wine or medicine bottle of blue-green glass [blue under reflected light but green in transmitted light], is here presented to illustrate the misleading result of multiple abrasions, which led the finder to initially consider this to be a prehistoric flint tool. The Australian Aboriginal custom of working up arrowheads from glass or china telegraph insulators could produce objects of this appearance; examples were displayed at North Lincolnshire Museum in recent times and are held by various museum collections. Glass. Fifteen tiny sherds of translucent glass, all of a greenish tint, two markedly paler, of which one blue-green piece has a crazed surface. Most appear of a similar bright green tint probably to be associated with wine bottles and appear to have been melted or partly melted. While this material might have had an industrial explanation if reported in significant quantity, a small group may more likely relate merely to glass from a fierce bonfire. Abraded and water worn. None of the sides are perfectly straight. Toolmarks attest that the two 'legs' of the triangle - the sides perpendicular to each other - were cut, whereas the hypotenuse was formed as a result of the material breaking. A shard of glass, quite possibly Roman in date. The shard is possibly a fragment of window glass, although it does have a slight curvature so may actually be the base of a large vessel. It tapers in thickness from 12.93 mm at its thickest to 7.43 mm. It is opaque and has many inconsistencies and air bubbles and this, along with the pale green colour of the glass, is perhaps supportive of a Roman date. In the absence of a clear form and a stratified context this cannot be regarded as certain however.
