A post-medieval lead-alloy token of 16th-century date (North 2063). The bifacially decorated disc is not quite circular, having a straight edge at one point of the circumference. North (1960, 112) notes that such pieces were probably medalets rather than tokens as some appear to relate to Mary, Queen of Scots. These rare pieces are normally found in London, and were struck about 1574 (ibid., 112). Examples can be also found illustrated in Fletcher (2003, 49).

An 'American plantations token', made out of tin and minted under James II for use in the American plantations. This token was valued at one 24th of Spanish real, or one and a half farthings. In August 1688 John Holt, agent for a number of tin mines petitioned the King for the right to produce tin tokens for use in the American plantations. Though there are no surviving documents to prove that permission was granted, the existance of a number of dies cut by John Roettier and now in the British Museum, London, suggest that permission was granted. Just four months later on 11th D…

A lead Early Tudor token (c.1490-1545). These tokens were usually a lead, tin, pewter alloy (Mitchiner and Skinner 1984:102). The token probably belongs to the Tau Cross type, although the reverse is plain. The obverse has a plain cross in a circle with an oblique anti-clockwise ray border. It is similar to no. 13 plate 6 pg. 147 in Mitchiner and Skinner "Early Tudor Tokens c.1425-1672" British Numismatic Journal vol. 54 1984, although there are wider spaces between the rays in the border. All the tokens featured in this article have a London provenance. It is likely this token a…
