A copper alloy coin flan / copper disc, possibly a Northumbrian Styca of Aethelred II dating to the period AD 840 - 844. First reign. The coin appears to have been double-struck on either face, certainly off-flan. The 'obverse' has a pellet arc, or possibly a pellet cross, behind patterning obscured by corrosion. On the 'reverse' pellet borders can be seen in opposing arcs on the reverse and there is possible lettering within one of the arcs. This copper disc may have been a flan for a coin, but could have got stuck to the coins that were being struck resulting in reverse and off-fl…

A Milled Post-Medieval counterfeit silvered copper alloy coin; a contemporary copy of a silver Spanish 'dollar' or eight reales of Charles IV of Spain, counterstruck with the bust of George III (1760-1820). Due to a shortage in coinage during the late 1790s, a number of coins from South America and Spain were counterstruck with the portrait of George III from 1797 until about 1820. According to Lasser et al. (1997, page 38) in The Coins of Colonial America, the oval counterstamp was used from 1797 until 1804. According to Walden, Timothy (2002), The Spanish Treasure Fleets, Pinea…

Obv: PETRVS.II.D[...]ET.ALG.REX Rev: IN+HOC+SIGNO+VINCES+1689 Diam: 29.40 Wt: 9.25 g Barrie Cook from the British Museum comments: "This is almost certainly a case of a silver coin gilded to turn it into a gold one, then identified as a counterfeit and bored through for that reason. It is probably a silver half-crusado disguised as a gold moeda of Pedro II of Portugal. The only obvious difference (apart from the metal, of course) is that the silver coin says 200 next to the shield design on the front, whereas the gold…

A post medieval copper alloy coin. An Early post-Medieval Spanish Colonial copper-alloy coin, probably a four Maravedis and probably of Carlos and Joanna (1516-1556 ). It is very corroded, but one side appears to carry a design consisting of a V with concave sides, at the bottom of which is a pair of annulets. The other side has two broad, vertical lines terminating in lozenges at both ends, separated and flanked by what appear to be single pellets. There also appears to be a crown above. The central motifs are quite small in relation to the legend, which appears to have larg…

Copper alloy Coin. Chinese Check, as identified by finder. Possibly milled disc with central square aperture; Chinese characters appear on both sides of coin but remain undeciphered by this reporter. Robert Kawka kindly comments as follows: Both image needs to be rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise. Coin of the Qianlong emperor 1736-1795. Obverse is right hand image which reads Qian long tong bao in Chinese. Reverse is written in Manchurian and difficult to make out from this image and would identify the mint.
