A white semi-opaque glass bead of Iron Age to Modern date (about 400 BC - AD 1900). It is globular and slightly asymmetrical. Measurements are; diameter 9.4mm, length 6.5mm and weight 0.75g.  The central hole has a diameter of 2.3mm. Owing to the lack of diagnostic features and contextual evidence it is very difficult to accurately date simple beads such as this example, because they were in use across a number of different periods.

Glass vessel fragment. A small concavo-convex sherd from a globular vessel of translucent cobalt blue glass with numerous bubbles to length 2.5mm trapped in the metal. Circumferential lines and a rubbed band towards one edge suggest the turning of a vessel while it was being blown. The good preservation and bubbled metal may together point to a Roman vessel or a glass made according to a Roman soda glass recipe, a skill which lasted into Middle Saxon times but which was then lost until the post-medieval period. The finder kindly notes the bubbled and translucent character of the glass …

The very top of the rim is rounded, with a thin strip of what appears to be lead running through it. This rounded section is 3.58mm wide and 3.91mm thick. Beneath it there is an incision on the interior of the glass, where the thickness reduces to 3.58mm, before rising to another rounded section with a thin strip of lead running through it. This section is 4.58mm thick. On the exterior, there is an incision running along the b…

A rim sherd from a glass vessel of unknown age. It is triangular, and it is clear and colourless. The very top of the rim is rounded, with a thin strip of what appears to be lead running through it. This rounded section has a diameter of roughly 5.71mm, and beneath it there is an incision on the exterior of the glass, where the thickness reduces to 4.82mm, before rising to a ridge where the thickness is 5.06mm. After the ridge, the surface starts to curve inward. The glass is relatively clean, and there seem to be few bubbles in the glass.

Whilst often considered to be Roman (see, for example, LON-00CE9C, and SWYOR-F91EF7) or Early Medieval, beads of this form have been in use from the Iron Age through to modern times, for example 'in spangles on lace making bobbins in the 19th century', (GLO-867B76). Consequently i…
