Roman vessel: Samian ware bowl, form 36 in Hartley 'Samian ware or terra sigillata' chapter VIII in Collingwood and Richmond (1969 edition) The Archaeology of Roman Britain. No potters stamp is present. The curved rim is decorated with stylised leaves en barbotine: a thick clay slip was trailed onto the surface of the vessel in the form of tear-drop shaped leaves with a curved stem. Medieval sherds of sandy grey ware, from a minumum of two vessels. Two rim sherds - probably from the same vessel. The rim has a wide 'comma' shaped cross section, measuring 16.46mm thick, 11.77mm wide. Both sherds weigh 21.38 grams. One rim sherd - from a seperate vessel. The rim is elongated sub-rectanglular in cross section, with the outer edge being slightly pointed, measuring 22.18mm thick, 7.48mm wide. It weighs 18.85 grams. Three body sherd, of varying thickness 1) 9.62mm thick. 12.69 grams 2) 6.48mm thick. 5.03 grams. 3) 7.54mm thick. 20.73 grams.

Post Medieval glazed vessel handle. The fabric is orange-red with a dark brown glaze. The handle is rectangular in plan with an oval cross section. There are two oval depressions on the outer edge of the handle and a small circular depression on the reverse. There are worn breaks at both ends. It is 57.62mm long, 23.32mm wide, 18.43mm thick and weighs 30.89 grams.

One sherd of a fineware pottery vessel of early Roman date. Part of the foot-ring base of a Terra Nigra jar. This is a wheel-thrown vessel. The fabric is mid grey in colour, well-fired and smooth to the touch. The surface is dark grey and has been burnished. Length 33mm, thickness of the foot-ring 4.58mm, weight 6.9g. Using a rim chart it can be calculated that the base would have been 90mm in diameter. 'Terra Nigra' was produced in Gaul during the late 1st century BC into the 1st century AD and was imported from Gaul into Britain in the first century AD (circa AD 43-70).…
