Description: A complete gold sheet metal biconical bead with gold wire filigree decoration of early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) date. The two sections of the bead are each made from sheet metal rolled into truncated cones leaving a hole in the centre of their apex. One of these holes is encircled by applied beaded wire, but this is missing on the other. A complete Early Medieval gold pin dating to circa AD 550-900. The head is flat and sub-oval, broadly heart-shaped, with two lobes projecting from the top. The head gives way to the cylindrical shank, which tapers gently into a point. Both faces of the pin head are decorated with the same incised design. Description: A fragment of a probable Early Medieval gold disc-shaped pendant or bracteate dating to circa AD 450-500. The extant piece consists of the loop and a small portion of the disc. The loop is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly cylindrical in section with a hollowed interior. The cylindrical loop is wrapped/soldered with fine beaded wire at both ends. Description: An Early Medieval gold spangle dating to circa AD 450-500. The extant element is trapezoidal and flat. It has no decoration on either face. A small punched perforation is situated at the narrower end of the piece which would have acted as a suspension loop.
Length: 14.5mm; Width: 7.4mm; Thickness: 0.2mm; Weight: 0.20g.
Discussion: The piece would have been suspended as part of a larger set forming a spangle, similar to a more complete piece: 2009 T440. Spangles were more typically made from copper alloy and would have been suspended from necklaces, pin heads…
