Record ID: SF-A22557
Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete copper-alloy basal-looped spearhead of the Middle Bronze Age, dating to 1500 BC -1150 BC. The blade has a flame shape in plan and a lozenge-shaped cross-section, with a slightly rounded mid-rib ridge extending to the its tip. There is only one oval loop surviving out of the two which are incorporated into the base of the blade, one either side of the central rib. The mid-rib extends and expands to form the hollow circular-sectioned socket. Both edges of the blade are moderately worn and the surfaces are pitted. See Davis' Type 3 (2006, plates 9-18) and Davis (2012, N…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A gold unidentified object possibly of the Bronze Age period, dating to 1500 BC- 800 BC. It consists of a rectangular strip of metal, which has been wrapped on itself in order to take the shape of a cylinder. The outer face of the cylinder is decorated with seven parallel grooves running lengthwise. The bead is dented and is blocked by hard soil, which has not been intentionally removed. Date: c. 1500 BC- 800 BC Dimensions: 9.07mm long; 5.06mm in diameter; 0.59mm in thickness of the strip. It weighs 0.93g (soil included). Discussion: This multi-grooved strips of gold is…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1550-1250 BC. This example is of Davis' Group 6-'Developed side looped spearheads', probably belonging to the Acton Park or Taunton metalworking phases. The base of the socket is missing along with the edge of one blade wing, but otherwise the spearhead is preserved intact. The socket itself is circular sectioned and extends into the head of the spear for a short distance before becoming solid, retaining most of one socket-loop at its irregularly truncated end. The latter has a broadly lo…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A fragment originating from a large socketed and basal looped spearhead of later Middle Bronze Age date (c. 1400-1150 BC) belonging to Davis' group 8; 'elongated spearheads with incorporated basal loops' forms. This object can probably be assigned to the Taunton or Penard metalworking phases. Only the upper section of the spearhead survives, consisting the upper blade and point, probably representing less than a third of the original object. The lower portion of the body, side-loops and socket have been removed by means of a neat old truncation. The upper blade is triangula…

An incomplete copper-allow Bronze Age awl, dating to 1150-800 BC. The shank has a square cross-section at its middle and it is double ended. Starting from the middle square cross-section it continues tapering towards a chisel-like and broken end, while on the opposite side it turns into an oval cross section ending in a incomplete tip. The chisel-like part is heavily abraded and slightly bent sideways. Cf with SF-C1752A on the PAS database. Length: 63.63 mm Width, at its centre: 4.23 mm Max thickness of the oval cross-sectioned part: 4.33 mm Max thickness of the chisel-…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete copper-alloy spiral ring probably of Bronze Age period, dating to c. 1500.1150 BC. It is circular in plan and it is formed by three coils of an oval cross-sectioned metal wire; both ends are broken and worn. The surface is very abraded and heavily pitted. A similar object has been recorded on the PAS database as HAMP-7556B3 and SF-761FF6 , see also examples of spiraloid rings in the Near Lewes hoard (SUSS-C5D042) and the Ockham hoard (SUR-B41DB6), both Middle Bronze Age in date. The function of this object is uncertain, given that it is too large to be a finger ring a…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete cast copper-alloy socketed chisel of Late Bronze Age date and probable Ewart Park metalworking phase attribution c. 900-750 BC. In form it is very similar in appearance to socketed axes, though the small size of this object heavily infers that function as a chisel is far more likely. The socket mouth is widened and circular in plan, tapering slightly to the midpoint of the object before expanding outwards again towards the flared working end of the object. Preserved in good condition with an even greyish-coloured metal and encrustations covering some portions of the object,…
