Two Roman gold ear-rings, one (A) a hook ear-ring, the other (B) a hoop ear-ring. A) Gold ear-ring of disc, bar and pendant type, its hook slightly distorted, the disc dented and damaged at one side, and one of the two pendants lacking. The embossed disc and double-ridged trapezoidal crossbar are fastened to an integral plain back-plate. The disc conceals the lower part of the hook, which is fastened to its back-plate. Similarly, the fastening of the two pendant hooks at the lower part of the back-plate is concealed behind the crossbar. The surviving pendant, undoubtedly orig…

Description: Part of a Roman gold earring with relief decoration. It is circular in shape and made from two thicknesses of sheet cut to shape, with a D-shaped projection at the bottom which has been pierced to form a suspension loop. The decoration is in relief on both faces, and there is a rim around the perforation on both faces, making it difficult to know which face is the front. Part of what would have been the upper edge has been torn away and the whole pendant is crumpled. There was surely another hole in this missing portion of the disc, to a…

Description: Gold earring of Roman date, probably of Allason-Jones's type 11. It appears to consist of two layers of thin circular sheet backplate, both now crumpled but originally 14mm in diameter. In the centre of the front is a smaller circular sheet element which may once have been three-dimensional but is now crushed flat. A circular-section wire hook emerges from the reverse. It tapers as it curves out and around to form an apparently well-preserved hook in the shape of an open loop; the wire has a blunt end which is slightly recurved. Dimensions:&nb…

Description:  A complete Roman gold earring dating to circa AD 200-300. The object consists of a square or box-shaped setting with straight edges. The setting recesses contains a dark green to black squarely cut gemstone. The surface of the gemstone is abraded. The gemstone is surrounded by a flat, thin border around which a frame of oblique ridges in relief, giving the impression of twisted wire, is set. The reverse of the setting is flat. Emerging from the reverse, having been soldered to the setting, is a now bent and distorted circular-sectioned wire which tapers gently into a…

The ear ring is made of gold with a square setting, which is set within a decorated border. The setting is formed by a square cell which has a plain frame around the edge. The setting is probably dark green glass which is slightly abraded except for where it is chipped, and the surface is then shiny with conchoidal ripples. The frame around the setting on the outer face appears to be integral to the surrounding border. On the reverse this square cell forms a high-relief platform from which a length of gold wire protrudes from the centre. The platform has a burr around the base of t…

A complete and slightly squashed post-medieval gold ear ring of 19th century date or later. The ear ring is composed by a 15.54mm diameter hollow ring and a second D-shaped smaller element which is wrapped around it. This second element is circular in cross section and shows a straight plate on the back part that is not visible when the ear ring is worn. To the top of the plate is attached the hook which has been bent on itself. To the end of the hook is a small rounded knop. The ear ring appears to be light weight and it is likely that both elements are hollow inside. The D-shape …
