A medieval copper alloy ceitil of Afonso V (AD 1438-1481) of Portugal. A ceitil is one-sixth of a real. The coin is damaged around the edge, making parts of the inscription illegible. The use of fleurs-de-lys around the shield is most commonly found on the coins of Afonso V. The name ceitil is taken from Ceuta, the fortress that fell to the Portugese in 1415. This event marked the dawn of Portugese expansion in Africa. Grierson (1991) illustrates a similar ceitil of Afonso V on page 191, no.419.
