A medieval silver coin; a Continental Sterling imitation probably dating from 1313 - 1322 AD. It was struck for Gaucher of Chatillon, at the Mint of Yves. A Medieval silver coin; a contemporary continental imitation of an Edwardian Penny dating from the late 13th or 14th century. See Meyhew number 377. This coin has also been recorded on the UKDFD database as number 28324. The record there notes that: "[The coin was] possibly struck at the Yves mint of Gaucher de Chatillon. Towards the end of the 13th century, sterlings of the Low Countries began to circulate widely (but unofficially) in England. A struck/ hammered sterling imitation Edwardian penny minted in Yves by Gaucher of Chatillon (Florennes) between 1313-22 AD. There is a crowned bust facing fowards on the obverse, with a long cross dividing the coin in four on the reverse. The coin is very worn but in a poor condition.
Gaucher was constable of France and count of Porcien, holding the fief of Florennes by right of his wife Isabelle of Rumigny, whom he married in 1313 (N J Mayhew, 'Sterling Imitations of Edwardian Type', 1983, pages 93-100, types/ ref nos 237-50). [ed.cont]
