A Medieval silver coin; a contemporary continental imitation of an Edwardian Penny dating from the late 13th or 14th century. See Meyhew number 377. This coin has also been recorded on the UKDFD database as number 28324. The record there notes that: "[The coin was] possibly struck at the Yves mint of Gaucher de Chatillon. Towards the end of the 13th century, sterlings of the Low Countries began to circulate widely (but unofficially) in England. Their issuers increasingly imitated the English penny in an effort to ensure their ready acceptance. The present example represents the most extreme level of imitation, where even the legends are a direct copy of those on the English coin."

While the coin is identical in many ways with an English regular issue it combines features not normally seen together on the same coin. It has a bifoliate crown which is only found in Class 10 onwards or the coins of Edward III. However the legend EDW R ANGL DNS hYB is only found on Classes 1-9 or the Florin coinage of Edward III. The Canterbury Florin coinage has lombardic n's on the reverse whereas these are roman. It also combines a wedge footed R on the obverse with a stub footed R on the reverse and the initial mark is more similar to a cross potent than the typical cross pattee.Daniel PettGaucher of Châtillon count of Porcien and Constable (France)22WartlingSUSS-DF71E6235678Crowned bust facing, bifoliate crown with spearhead ornamentsCIVI/TAS /CAN/TOR1COINRestricted Accessfinds-235678163SUSS-DF65034Incomplete1300images/lburnett/1191334100148FDF6D2010CE42008-10-21T16:35:46ZLong cross dividing the legend with three pellets in each quarterCertainx1422122008-09-30T23:00:00Z0PossiblyMEDIEVALSilver41421MD129http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/MEDIEVALNon English coinCertainEDW R ANGL DNS hYBCivil Parish182022-07-14T07:08:18.458ZEast Sussex100CountyStruck or hammered1Certain2967191Metal detectorSUSS-0BA525.jpg26252014From finderPoor1434127511MD0.8DistrictCertain250851SUSS289618.11322St. Ann (Without)x14221263450771Lewes11728Penny2014-11-10T13:21:50ZReturned to finderSouth EastCirca
