Gold alloy Irstead type Iron Age quarter stater of the Iceni tribe. The coin is a whitish yellow and probably has an elevated silver content. Obverse: Latticed square on two opposing crescents with projecting branch above and below. Reverse: Horse stepping right, open head with pellet eye; further pellet between head and chest. Outline crescent with two ringed pellets above (one off-flan) in a smiling face configuration; triad of pellets in a triangular group to right. Ancient British Coins No.1480. Circa 20BC-AD10.

An Iron Age silver unit of the Southern Region / Regini, probably dating to the period c.60-20 BC. Obverse: Bust right(?) with crescent shaped hair curls. Reverse: Horse right, pellet in ring above, pellets and broken ring in front, possible devolved lyre motif below. This coin probably belongs in Bean's (2000: p. 70) type QsT1-6 group, likely related to silver units of the Regini with lyre motif beneath the horse (e.g. ABC, p. 53, no. 650) and with distribution focussed in southern Britain around West Sussex and Hampshire. A struck gold uninscribed quarter stater of the Western region (Dobunni) dating to the period c. 50 - 20 BC. Cottam et al's 'Sunburt little horse' type, listed in ABC as very rare (ABC 2009.). This example has been struck on an elongated flan, probably with a worn flan(s). A coin with similar obverse and reverse wear has been recorded as WAW-CFB026 on this database. During the Roman period, and perhaps earlier, the Dobunni inhabited an area covering the modern county of Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

The obverse depicts a stylised head of Apollo left.
The reverse has a bull butting right with exergual line below.
The remains of the casting sprue are visible at the top and bottom of the flan.
The diameter is 18.1mm not measured at the sprues. The thickness is 1.6mm and weighs 2.5g.

British Museum Catalogue Type: 2810; ABC 2175; Van Arsdell Type: 1290-1, which is dated from 30 BC to AD 10, but current thinking now dates them from the first half of the 1st century AD.
