Silver coin. Dirham of the Abbasid Caliphate (750-1258), as kindly identified by the finder. Paul Cannon kindly comments: 'I believe this to be a dirham of al-Mu’tadid. It is dated 288 AH ie AD 900/901. The mint is al-Shash'. This coin must indicate Viking trade links to have been discovered in Yorkshire.
?Obverse description; three horizontal lines of Arabic text; inscription of tiny letters in two orders.
Reverse description: Four vertical bars, inscription of larger letters in a single order.
Diameter: 27.9mm, Weight: 2.88gms
