Copper alloy coin, silvered. Base metal plated silver coated forgery of a Scots twenty shillings, probably of Charles II (1649-1685) from the legend though the style of coin and facing direction of bust are as for Charles I. As Charles II was crowned at Scone as King of Scotland in 1651 but lived in exile 1651-1660 this good copy might have been made during that period – the Scots mint being closed c.1650-1663. If this identification were confirmed, it may gain in interest as an example of political propagandist forgery rather than a simple fraud. Obverse description: Bust left,…
