A silver Medieval Sottish coin; a penny of Alexander III (AD 1249 - 1286), second coinage (AD 1280 onwards), type Mb or Mc. The mullets on the reverse have six points each, suggesting that the mint may be Berwick. See Spink's Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands (2003) number 5054 or 5055 on page 18. This coin also appears to fit into Burn's Group I, Class III. Compare number 13 on page 167 of The Coinage of Scotland (1887) Volume 1. The coin has been broken into two piece and repaired with glue, and there is a portion missing. It is 20mm diameter, 0.7mm thick and 1.13g.

A medieval Scottish penny of Alexander III (1249-1286). Second coinage (from AD 1280. Class I (Spink), or Class J (Stewart and North BNJ, Vol. 60, 1990). Initial mark: Cross Pattee. This is a very rare variety of a late penny of the Second Coinage. It is as Spink 5059. The face has a flat profile and large pellet eyes. The die using the same punches as John Balliol's first issue. The reading on the reverse is also as John Balliol's first issue. There is only 1 obverse die of this type. It may well postdate the death of Alexander III. Possibly belonging to the Interregnum (1290-1292). …
