 A cast copper alloy coin (limesfalsum), copying an as of Commodus (AD 180-192) (Reece Period 14), with an unclear reverse. It appears that the coin was produced from a flawed clay mould.   Limesfalsa ('Frontier Forgeries') were first identified on the Rhine and Danube Frontiers.  An increasing number have been found in Britain and recorded with the PAS Database.  Two pieces from the same mould, found in Hertfordshire, do suggest that they were also produced in Britain.  It appears that many of these coins were actually produced in the AD 230s to …

BMC IV, p. 719, no. 166; RIC III, p. 378, no. 113var. The obverse legend M COMM ANT AVG P BRIT FEL is not recorded for this reverse type in RIC (published in 1930). However, such a coin is in the British Museum Catalogue (Published 1940) because the British Museum acquired an example from the L. A. Lawrence collection in 1937.
