An incomplete silver Roman denarius of Otho dating to the period of March 9th to mid April AD 69 (Reece Period 3). PONT MAX reverse depicting Ceres standing left, with two corn ears and a cornucopiae. Mint of Rome. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 261, no. 20var.
This is a denarius variant of the listed aureus type in RIC. Two examples of this type are known in the British Museum: 1867,0101.1628 and 2005,0834.1, with another three recorded by the PAS: BH-F5BD67, WMID-BE1BF1, and YORYM-6E270D. The type is recorded in BMC I (p. 365, no. 9; BM: 1867,0101.1…

A 'sestertius of Otho' (AD 69). This is a Renaissance or modern forgery as Otho minted no sestertii. The obverse type is recorded, but the reverse type is not included in Z. H. Klawans, Imitations and Inventions of Roman Coins (see page 54, nos. 3-4). Many of these pieces were made in Italy for collectors in the Renaissance and early modern periods and they are often called 'Paduans'.
