A cast, copper alloy, coin weight of early post-medieval date, probably dating from 1530-1600AD. It is square and double sided. One side carries the device of a crowned rose and the other that of a hand within a wreath. These markings suggest that it was of Continental manufacture, the hand being the mark for Antwerp in the Low Countries, and that it was used to weigh the gold crowns issued during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I between 1526 and 1548. It is 15.21mm square and weighs 3.35g. Note: This find was recorded from an export licence. Similar examples are illustrated i…

Copper alloy coin weight, square. The obverse bears the hand of Antwerp (upright) with a "9"(?) to the left of the hand and a "0" to the right (for 1590), and an "H" below the 9 on the left. The H will be the maker's initial - presumably there should be another to the right of the hand, although this cannot be seen. P&BR Withers (1995) list two Antwerp coin weight makers with the first initial H - Hans Foncq., 1577-1603 and HW, an unknown 16th century maker. The reverse shows a crowned shield possibly containing a lion (?), with lettering around, possibly O(?)HO trefoil IRE trefoil ...…

The coin weight is square in shape and is made from a very thin plate of flat copper alloy. This type of coin weight would have been used to weigh coins of Elizabeth I.
