A fragment of a medieval silver halfgroat of Edward III (1327-77), Fourth Coinage, Pre-Treaty Series (1351-61), probably Series C or C/D mule dating to c.AD1351-53, initial mark: Cross 1 (probably), mint: London. Ref: North 1991: 48-53. The coin is badly damaged with only around 40% surviving and most of the coin is missing from around 1 o'clock to around 7 o'clock (obverse). In addition the coin is clipped. Length: 21.66mm. Width: 11.64mm. Thickness: 0.83mm. Weight: 0.90g. Die axis: 2.

A clipped imitation of a medieval gold quarter noble of Edward III (1327-1377). The obverse shows annulets on the cusps of the tressure and a lis in the centre of the reverse suggesting the prototype was a quarter noble of Edward III's Treaty Period, the annulets seen in the 'Transitional Series' of 1361-3 (North 1224), the lis seen in the Treaty Series of 1363-9 (North 1243-4). Ref: North 1991: 50. The coin is worn in places, with some chips and cracks at the edge of the flan. The attribution as a potential Series C/D mule is based on the shape of the letter 'N' on obverse and reverse, with possible reverse barring on the obverse (as in Series C) and unbarred on the reverse (as in Series D). This is a known combination listed in North 1991, p.45.
