An incomplete Medieval silver plated contemporary forgery of a groat of probably Edward III (1327-77) dating to c.1351-77. A copper-alloy core is visible with traces of a green patina and the obverse appears to be of billon and is illegible. The reverse is slightly better quality silver and is marked as mint of London. Diameter 26.5mm, thickness 0.8mm, weight 2g.

A medieval silver penny of Edward III (1327-1377), Fourth Coinage, either pre-Treaty Series E (AD1354-55; North 1169) or post-Treaty (AD1369-77; North 1295), initial mark: cross 2/cross potent. Ref: North 1991: 49-54, 59.  The coin is worn and incomplete with part of the outer circle missing, having broken away leaving an irregular edge. The coin has also been clipped removing parts of the outer edge.  Obverse; Crowned bust facing forward. Reverse; Long cross breaking legend with three pellets in each quarter. Quatrefoil to centre. York mint. Weight 0.80 grams, diameter 18.67mm.
