A silver siliqua of Julian II as Augustus (AD 360-3) (Reece Period 18); VOTIS V MVLTIS X in wreath. This coin appears to be regular, comparing favourably with a coin from the Bromham Hoard in the British Museum (1981 0910 39) which is of similar style with the same dotted design of the lower wreath. The lettering on the Bromham coin is not very neat and the F is not well cut. The legend on this coin - D N IVLIAN-VS P L AVG - has an L for an F, which is probably the result of a die-cutter's error. RIC VIII, p. 227, cf no. 295. Diameter: 17mm; thickness: 1.5mm. Weight: 2.08g.

An incomplete silver siliqua of Julian, AD 355-363. This coin is a contemporary copy*, made using high quality silver. The obverse, which bears the legend 'D N IVLIAN-VS [P F AVG]', appears to have been copied from a coin of Arles (cf. RIC no. 292); the VOTIS V MVLTIS X reverse, however, has a Lyon mintmark and is a copy of RIC nos. 218-219. Although generally well executed, the poor formation of some of the letters adds weight to the belief that this is a forgery. Both the Lyons and Arles coins date from AD 360-363. Approximately two thirds of the coin survive. The surface…
