Moorhead (A History of Roman Coinage in Britain, p200) suggests that heavy clipping of this nature took place in the 5th Century, possibly with local official sanction to ease the shortage of silver. The V on the reverse does look like an X so might be a die-engraver's error; there does appear to be a dot in the middle of MV•LT which is common for the type.
