A damaged, clipped and very worn medieval silver penny of Edward III (1327-77), Fourth Coinage, pre-Treaty series, probably Series C (North 1149) dating to AD1351-52, mint: London (unclear), initial mark no longer survives. Ref: North 1991: 50.
Approximately half of the coin survives, probably a little less, clipped and broken. The obverse is particularly worn leaving a shadow of the bust visible.
The annulet in each quarter of the reverse is seen on Series A, C, D, E or Gb (North 1136, 1149,1156, 1167 or 1206) but the reverse-barred N is listed by North (1991: 49-53) as on…

The coin is in poor condition with just under half of the coin missing, broken along the line of one set of the arms of the cross on the reverse. The flan is also cracked and torn which might suggest the coin had been bent or folded thus weakening the coin. From what remains the obverse reads X ANGL (reverse-barred N) which, oriented in relation to the crown, suggests the inscr…

An incomplete medieval silver penny of Edward III (1327-77), Fourth Coinage, Pre-Treaty Period, Series C, D, E or G dating to AD1351-61, mint: Durham (North 1150, 1159 1170 or 1221/1). Ref: North 1991: 50-54; Wren 1995: 88-94.
The coin is damaged, missing a fragment comprising c.20% of the flan, broken away leaving irregular edges. The coin is also very worn and clipped. Its identification as a penny of Edward III's Fourth Coinage is based on the crozier as a cross end on the reverse before CIVI and the end of the mint name as MIE (i.e. DVNELMIE).

The coin has been folded (obverse facing outwards) and is worn and damaged in palces making full identification of the coin difficult. The obverse inscription ending FRAnC DNS hYB is typical of the rare issues of the Third Coinage but is also listed, with variations, on some Series G coins in Woodhead (1996), e.g. pl. 5 nos 41-2.
