A medieval gold finger ring (c. AD 1400 – 1500). The band is flat with a rectangular cross section and has been bent with two sides flattened against each other. On the exterior is an incised blackletter inscription with the words alternating with sprigs of foliage and flowers. The outer edges of the band are decorated with a border containing pellets. The object appears to have been fashioned by attaching the bezel, shoulders and setting of an existing ring to a separate, probably, older posy ring with a kind of resin or adhesive which has hardened to a dark colour. The bezel is faceted and houses a pale-yellow gem or paste stone with a complex cut. There are traces of the dark material used to secure the hoop and bezel around the setting.
