Small unfinished clear glass bead of uncertain date, probably within the period c. 100 BC - 1100 AD. The bead is spherical and uneven in form, with a slightly flattened top and bottom. The glass has a greenish hue and the surface is heavily marked and abraded. An attempt has been started on one side of the bead to drill a hole through it but the attempt was soon abandoned, leaving a circular depression. The object is 8.29mm in width and 7.05mm in thickness. It weighs 0.62g. Glass beads are very difficult to date without archaeological context as they were used as accessories from t…

Blue glass melon bead of probable Roman date, c. 43 - 410 AD. The bead is broadly spherical in shape with wide pointed ridges running diagonally down the sides in a decorative style known as gadrooning. A circular hole runs through the centre of the bead. The edges of the hole are rounded and not crisp. The original shape of the bead is largely obscured by a large degree of surface wear. The bead is now light blue and matt, with white mottling. There is a small circular perforation at one side of the bead which is angled and does not pierce through entirely. The bead is broadly D-shap…

Blue glass bead of uncertain but probably Roman date, c. 43 - 410 AD. The bead is broadly spherical in shape and is slightly pointed on one side. The bead is D-shaped in section. A hole runs through the centre of the bead; this is circular at one end but oval at the other, suggesting that it has been bored through from one side. Faint horizontal linear grooves run around the widest part of the bead, perhaps serving a decorative function or as the result of the manufacturing process. The bead is light blue in colour with translucent yellow patches. The surface exhibits a number of larg…
