Roman copper-alloy Trumpet brooch c. 75 - 175 AD, in good condition with a smooth, green-brown patina. The brooch retains a swivelling wire chain loop at the head of brooch, which has been bent, connecting to a spring mechanism at the back of the head. The catchplate is also at the back of the brooch, with only the pin missing. At the centre of the bow is a good example of the fully developed acanthus decoration typical of these brooches, extending all the way around the bow. The bow terminates in a round, flat-headed ridged knob with the rivet that was used to attach it still visible…

Roman Colchester type one-piece brooch, c. 25 - 60 AD. Incomplete, the brooch in its current state consists of a narrow bow tapering towards the foot, which has sustained damage and is bent at the end, and a head consisting of two narrow wings protruding at right angles to the bow, in front of a spring mechanism, half of which is missing. The spring is attached to the head of the brooch by a forward facing hook on the top of the brooch, a feature characteristic of this type of brooch. Towards the bottom of the brooch at the back of the bow is the remnant of a very small catchplate. Th…

Copper-alloy Roman T-shaped brooch, c. 50 - 150 AD. The brooch is incomplete consisting in its present form of a plain tapering bow, a head which consists of tubular wings encasing an axis to form a hinge mechanism, and a pin which is still attached and mobile. The bottom half of the bow has been lost, but the upper portion of a narrow catchplate is still apparent on the back of the bow. Both the end of the pin and the bow have been bent, both in the same direction. The copper-alloy of the brooch is corroded and a rough green patina has formed through this process on the main body of …

Roman Trumpet brooch, c. 75 - 175 AD. Incomplete, only the flared 'trumpet' head and upper portion of the bow remains, including the decorative mid-bow triple flange with acanthus pattern typical of this class of brooches, extending all the way around the bow. While the spring mechanism is missing, there remains a semi-circular lug on the back of the head that would have held the spring in place; this has been bent to the side. More damage is apparent on the head as a small strip has been torn from the bottom of the head and bent upwards. Still faintly visible on the head is a curvili…

Copper-alloy Roman trumpet brooch, c. 75 - 175 AD. The brooch is mostly complete, missing only the lower portion of its pin. The pin is attached to an axis bar behind the head which also holds the spring mechanism. The spring is held in place by a lug and the end of the spring wire curves beneath the axis bar. The head of the brooch is the flared 'trumpet' shape characteristic of this type, curving back downwards from the bow of the brooch with the spring mechanism hidden behind it. There is a large knob towards the middle of the bow, which is decorated in a simple linear style with g

Copper-alloy Roman trumpet brooch, c. 75 - 175 AD. The brooch is complete and in good repair apart from damage to the bottom of the brooch that has bent the bottom of the bow as well as the pin upwards. In addition, corrosion of the copper-alloy has created a pale-green patina, although shiny smooth patches on the head of the brooch betray the original patina. The head of the brooch is the flared 'trumpet' shape characteristic of this brooch type, curving backwards from the bow. Behind the head is nestled the spring mechanism, attached to the head by a circular lug and comprising of a…

Copper-alloy Roman trumpet brooch, c. 75 - 175 AD. This brooch is simply made with a reduced 'trumpet' head and the chain loop cast in one with the main body of the brooch. Only the bottom portion of the chain loop survives where it joins to the head. Behind the head is a hinge mechanism formed from a bar axis encased within tubular wings. The pin is attached to this same bar axis by a lug at the head of the pin. The bottom section of the pin is missing and the remaining length of pin is bent slightly. At the back of the brooch at the bottom of the bow is a small catchplate. The bow i…

Copper-alloy wire chain loop from Roman brooch, with loop clip (c. 75 - 200 AD). The bottom sections of the chain loop, which would have run through a spring, are missing. It is difficult to date or categorise this fragment with certainty, but chain loops such as these were a feature on Trumpet brooches (75 - 175 AD) and Headstud brooches (75 - 200 AD) which gives a wide date range and an indication of the type of brooch from which this wire chain loop came. The loop has a dark brown patina with greenish brown patches due to corrosion of the copper-alloy. Length: 20.09mm Width: 20.…

Fragment and pin of Roman aucissa brooch, no longer attached. Pin is in good condition with a pierced triangular lug at the head. The fragment comes from the head of the brooch. At the top, the head is rolled over to form two cylinders which would have encased the bar axis. There is a gap between the two where the pin would have been attached, comprising the hinge mechanism. Part of the bar axis remains in one cylinder, although it is missing an end knob; on the other side, the tubular casing has been torn and unravelled so that it remains attached on one end only and the copper alloy…

Fragment of Roman copper-alloy brooch. The fragment is corroded which has obscured much of the detail and resulted in a blue-green patina. On the reverse of the fragment is a pierced lug which protrudes at a right angle from the brooch fragment; the top section of this is missing. The obverse of the brooch fragment betrays decorative detail formed of circular and curvilinear motifs, but the design is largely obscured by corrosion. The fragment is too damaged to state for sure what type of brooch this came from, but the relative size of the decorated front section in relation to the lu…

Fragment from a copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, c.AD 43 - 410. The fragment consists of a narrow bow which terminates in a flat rounded foot knob. There is a rivet on the bottom of the foot knob which is clearly visible and sunken slightly into the knob. At the back of the bow is a catchplate which connects to the foot knob at the bottom, widening to form a roughly triangular shape. At the bottom of the catchplate a strip is folded over to form a catch to secure a pin. A small lump of corroded metal caught in this catch may be a relict of the pin, which is now missing.
