The sherd is sub-rectangular in form and has been broken into two pieces. The fabric is gabbroic (clay that weathers over the gabbro stone on the Lizard) with inclusions of pale feldspar, dark augite and mica. The colour of the fabric is a light brown interior to more burnt exterior suggesting it has been fired at a high temperature.

Similar artefacts are recorded on the database: see for example references LANCUM-EEE828 and IOW-3D7855. Geake, (in 2001. Finds Recording Guide. At Winchester they are found mainly in 13th- or 14th-century contexts, and it was thought some years ago that when graphite was discovered in Cumbria in the late 16th century lead pencils went out of use; but metal-detector finds of well-made mass-produced pencils suggest that in fact they carried on being used well into the post-medieval period".2936120017004CORNPAS.2023.352023-05-29T12:48:02Z2024-01-25T12:26:36Z20.93PAS647490F2001F807.47.3830.11191412141427437502447143750CornwallCornwallSt. JustSW372850.09374923-5.67858335bands.shops.handy10CORN-492A5BLead11094CastCompleteGoodMEDIEVALx14221POST MEDIEVALx41047x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderCORN-490F2F_65b2535d01855.jpg1259491images/lauramiucci/South WestProbably22024-01-25T12:26:36.24Zfinds-11138171113817CORN-B6C615VESSELPOST MEDIEVALAn incomplete cast copper-alloy vessel leg, probably from a cauldron, posnet or skillet, of Post-Medieval date (c. The vessels to which these were attached were usually of a tripod form and were widely used from circa AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler, Green and Payne (2009) suggest there were four main types of leg used and would classify this is a Type C in use from the late 16th century and ubiquitous by the 17th (p.6, fig. 4c). An near complete translucient blue coloured circular trading glass bead with some pitting to the surface. The bead appears to have been manufactured by a mounding process as there is no evidence of it being formed by winding on a madrel.
Trade beads were produced in huge numbers from the late Medieval to the early modern periods.

Dating is difficult as the context the bead was removed was not preserved. Possible dates from the post-medieval to the late 19th Century.
