The external face of the hoop has an engraved Latin inscription in black-letter (or 'Gothic') script. Copper-alloy Roman brooch of Hod Hill type (Mackreth 2011, type 8a, see plate 96). The brooch is partial and is missing the pin and axis bar. This brooch likely dates from AD 43-70. The bow is formed of a raised banded portion of three transverse ribs below which are two (now broken) loops that meet a horizontal cross bar. At the centre of the two loops and in the centre of the bow is a grooved tranverse triangle. There is further moulding beneath this triangle but it is now worn almost entirely away.
