Object type: SADDLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy one-piece decorative saddle pommel. Only two thirds of the pommel remain as the area where the rivet holes would have been has been sheared off, leaving half of one rivet hole on one edge and another half of a rivet hole on the apex of the pommel. Immediately below that incomplete rivet hole there is what appears to be the remains of another rivet which has caused the metal to break away around it. There may have been two other wings at either side with rivet holes in them; there is a fracture line on the more complete edge of the pommel measuring 19 mm wh…

Cast copper alloy receptacle foot, probably from a skillet or small vessel. The foot has broken off from the rest of the leg just above the collar, which remains. The foot is hoofed, triangular in section with one central rib which extends the base of the foot to a slight point. There are traces of two parallel engraved lines outlining the outward facing surface of the foot. The back of the foot is flat and chamfered outwards at the end to create a flat surface for the vessel to stand on. There are patches of black organic material on the front and base of the foot which would have be…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy sub-rectangular single loop buckle with concave sides with bifid mouldings and a narrowed strap bar. The pin is missing. The front of the buckle has a moulded pin notch consisting of a hollow raised V-shape with oblique grooves on either side of the V. There are a few patches of black lacquer surviving on the upper surface of the frame suggesting that the buckle was coated to protect it from corrosion during wear.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a very similar example on page 28, no.146 which is slightly smaller but has the same decoration and moulded pin notch. He d…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy double-looped rectangular buckle that is undecorated but has previously been coated with a dark corrosion product which has been cleaned off. It has a flat back and slightly rounded upper surface, bevelled around the outer edge, with an integral narrowed and slightly recessed strap bar, missing the pin. Each corner of the buckle is very slightly expanded, making it almost trapezoidal in plan.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a plain rectangular buckle on page 75, no.461 which is almost identical in size (39 mm x 27 mm) which is dated from c.1570-1700. He states that t…

Incomplete cast copper alloy two piece buckle, flat in section with the remains of the drilled frame to hold the spindle surviving on one side. The buckle was sub-rectangular in shape with undulating edges punctuated with a moulded rosette at each corner of the frame and above the spindle hole and where the pin would have rested. The rosettes are linked all around the frame with a band of finely stamped vertical lines between two raised twisted rope mouldings. The buckle is missing its pin and chape, as well as almost half of the frame.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman knee brooch, missing its pin, most of the spring mechanism and the hook of the catchplate. The cylindrical head has a very short crossbar and the remains of a central loop on top of the crossbar where the spring would have been attached. The body of the brooch may have been made in two pieces, as the back plate of the brooch is straight and flat but the upper half of the bow, the 'knee', is formed by a projecting loop of metal which is joined to the back plate just below the head and again half way down the brooch, creating a sealed loop. The foot is…

Incomplete cast copper alloy hinged T-shaped Roman brooch, missing its pin, foot and catchplate. The form and decoration, with pairs of spaced oblique ribs that curve inwards towards each other, down the front of the bow, is similar to South-western T-shaped brooches illlustrated in Cornish Archaeology (2014), The Roman Brooches from Nornour, Isles of Scilly, on page 17, fig.17, nos.35-36. Only the upper part of the brooch has survived. The fastening for the brooch was originally hinged, with the hinge also missing. There is a notch at the back of the head where the hinge rotated arou…

An arm of a copper-alloy dagger guard (quillon) of Medieval date (c.1200-1400). The fragment includes the whole of one arm and half of the central rectangular aperture where the dagger blade would have fitted. The other arm has broken off.
The arm is circular in section and tapers in width from the central block and then expands to form a terminal which is circular in shape when viewed from the end. It appears that the arm is formed of a core wrapped around by a covering of sheet metal, with an open seam line visible on one face. It is very similar to another example on the database …

Upper part of a cast copper alloy Roman hinged Cornish Type 31 Aesica-variant brooch inlaid with red enamel triangles and arcs. The brooch is unusually solid and heavy for its small size. The head of the brooch has a u-shaped slot in the top where the pin would have rotated on the axial bar which would have been contained in a hole pierced through the top of the head. The pin and the axial bar are missing. The lower end of the brooch is also missing, as half of an extended triangle of enamel on the lower face is incomplete, but it is not clear how long the brooch was originally. On th…

Incomplete cast copper alloy South-western variant of a Roman dolphin brooch with hinged mechanism. Only the bow and one side of the cross bar have survived, but the copper alloy axial spindle is still in place in the cross-bar and part of the hinge of the pin is still visible behind the spindle. The end of the more complete wing is broken and then subsequently bent forward when it was more maleable and the bow is bent and missing sections suggesting that the brooch may have been partially melted in a fire or cremation. The bow is expanded from the head outwards before being stepped i…

A fragment of copper alloy Roman brooch, with the head, crossbar and foot missing. The bow has a rounded front face, is curved in section with a flat back and is thicker and wider at one end with broken edges on all sides. There is a suggestion of a line across the waist which might be part of a transverse moulding, but no distinguishable decoration above the line. Found close to a Roman Dolphin variant brooch with a similar width in plan and curvature in profile, recorded in CORN-2EB5A6, but there is not enough of the brooch remaining to suggest that they might have once been worn as…

The pivot mechanism is a semi-circular disc with a hole through the middle where the axial pin would have gone, held in place on either side of the pivot with thin sheets of metal, now largely broken away. Either lobe features an off centre circular aperture that is 3 mm in diameter. The reverse is concave, with the stubs of two integral pointed lugs projecting from the reverse to a height of 2 mm, each seated on a small round blob of metal.
