Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval cast copper alloy pilgrims badge, dating from the 15th century. The badge is figurative, depicting a standing figure of a bishop holding up a crozier in one hand and with the other hand raising two fingers in blessing. The figure is wearing a mitre or pointed headdress and robes that are draped. To the left of the standing figure are three smaller kneeling figures receiving the blessing, each with their hands raised and clasped. The badge probably represents St Nicholas. In the centre on the reverse is an integral pointed lug which would have attached the badge to a garment.…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy mount dating from the Post-medieval period. It is hexagonal in plan, with the stubs of two curved attachment lugs projecting from the rear which appear to have been cast integrally. The mount is cast in the shape of a Tudor rose, decorated in relief on the front face with a 6 petalled flower, alternating with six rounded leaves, inside a tressured border, accentuated by small knops at the points of the hexagon. The surface is badly corroded and if it was originally gilded, as seems likely, there are no remaining traces. The use of the Tudor rose motif suggests a date…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy lozenge-shaped stud or tack with a single integral attachment lug on the back. The mount is square with a projecting knop in each corner, one of which has broken off. The face of the mount is decorated with a circle of moulded pellets surrounding what appears to be a human head and shoulders, a bust, but seen the other way up could be a vase with a round body and and a triangular mouth. Small mounts like this are said to be more likely to be dress ornaments, but might also be mounts from leather straps or even small items of furniture.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An almost complete cast copper alloy barrel tap of late Medieval or early Post-medieval date. It comprises an openwork handle or key at the top of a shouldered cylindrical stem which fits into the body of the tap leading to the spout. Internally (not visible because the stem is still attached to the spout) there will be a circular perforation through the stem, so that as the tap is turned on, the perforation lines up with the pipe that leads to the liquid supply and allows it to flow through.
The handle is flat and has a central vertical bar ending in a projecting knop, delineated …

An almost complete cast and tinned copper alloy eye from a hook and eye dress fastening dating from the Post-medieval period, c.1500-1700. The surface of the item is corroded and flaking, so any traces of decoration on the front face can no longer be seen, but there are traces of tinning on one edge and on the back.

Silver long cross penny of Henry VI, First Reign (1422-1461). The coin is cracked and very worn, and most of the inscriptions are illegible, but the end of [hENR]ICVS can be made out in the obverse legend and CIVITAS [DVNO] LMI can be seen in the reverse legend, so it might be Durham mint. The initial mark appears to be a cross fleury with rounded ends but it is very worn and other marks are not visible to confirm this association. The ornaments and the central fleur in the crown are joined up to form a row of four circles.

A heavily clipped and worn silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), Exeter mint (1643-1646). The coin has been clipped right down to the inner circle so that all the inscriptions are missing, and the obverse of the coin is worn almost flat. The coin has also been bent into an S-shaped profile, perhaps to be used as a 'love token'. The obverse has a crowned bust facing left that appears to be from the outline a large Oxford type bust with X[II] behind the head. The reverse carries a garnished oval shield with the initials C and R on either side of the shield. Spink 3082

The copper alloy head of a figurine or possibly a mount, probably Roman. The head is female with swept back hairstyle with a topknot on either side of her head, an oval face and partially visible regular features. The head is hollow at the back and appears not to have ever had a back plate to mount the object, as the edges of the casting are quite smooth and patinated. It has broken off at the neck, so may once have been part of a full length figurine. There is no attachment loop, so it is unlikely to have been a steelyard weight as other similar items have been characterised, and it …
