A large cast lead cloth seal, circular in plan, embossed on one face with a double-headed eagle surmounted by a crown. The seal appears to be a single disc without obvious signs of an attachment for a second disc. The reverse of the disc is unmarked and with no apparent cloth impression. The disc has a slightly raised rim around the edge. The double-headed eagle is the symbol of the Hanseatic Clothworkers Guild, but its use on seals does not necessarily imply that this is a continental seal, according to Egan (1995) p.116. The Hanseatic organisation had outstations in Ipswich and Lond…

There is a 1 mm perforation 5 mm in from the terminal of the connecting strip. Both surfaces of the body of the seal are marked with numerous semi-parallel lines, spaced at about 13 per cm, which may possibly be the impressions of fabric in the soft lead surface. The…

No.22 is from Colchester, but nos.11 and 12 are from Devon. This cloth seal is in good condition with little damage on either surface or the edges. The two discs are joined by a folded connecting strip, which protrudes from the discs by 6.5 mm, and is 5.5 mm wide with a folded thickness of 4 mm. Together the discs have a diameter of 24 mm. The total thickness of the two discs is 4 mm. The lower disc has a central p…
