Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset

Copper alloy conical thimble with a plain basal zone and with a spiral of circular pits, probably hand-stamped, running around its wall above this. The top of the thimble, which is squashed flat, bears similar pits. Width: 28 mm, Height: 28 mm, Thickness (wall): 1 mm. These dimensions reflect the fact that the thimble has been flattened, and do not represent the original diameter and height of the thimble. Weight: 7.05 gms. Egan (2005) illustrates similar examples on page 132, fig.126, nos.630 & 631, which are dated from c.1550-1600.
