A incomplete copper-alloy object, possibly a medieval buckle (c.AD1200-1500). The brown patinated object comprises a strip of copper-alloy, square in section, with a hooked terminal at one end. Both terminals show clear signs of having being broken in antiquity, with corresponding corrosion and wear. toward the terminal opposite the hooked end (at what would presumably have been the mid point of the object prior to breakage), and located on the outer face of the metal strip, is a small projecting knop, almost triangular in form with parallel grooves at the base. On the side of th…

Cast copper alloy 'waisted' double-loop (also known as 'Figure of eight' or 'spectacle') sub-oval buckle frame. The buckle has a flat base and a convex profile. The strap bar has a rounded projecting knop incised with three lines at each end. As it narrows it appears to wrap over the frame, having the effect of pulling in the 'waist'. The outer edges of the frame are decoratively moulded with large angular protrusions, again incised with three lines. While the pin is missing, a small deposit of iron oxide, which partially obscures the incised decoration on one of the incised protrusio…
