"An attractive intaglio in a lower quality, base silver ring.
The material of the stone is a non crystalline quartz, a chalcedony, with an upper blue layer and brownish ground, so it could be called a blue onyx or nicolo [ jewellery terms rather than scientific ones], the blue caused by staining/chemical treatment. The gem was cut with an outwardly bevelled edge.
The subject is a cow, a popular subject from the Augustan period onwards, though I would date this to the late 1st century/first half of the 2nd century AD.

A post medieval New England silver three pence piece, issued by colony of Massachusetts, North America, 'Oak Tree' coinage (Noe Oak-28). Ref: Noe 1947.
The coin is pierced at about the 2 o'clock point and clipped almost symmetrically around part of its circumference.
The coin has part of a date on it 165[?] hoverer the last number has been removed by the piercing,
Though dated '1652', such coins tend to be attributed to the period c. 1667 - c. 1674 AD. The argument is that the date either alludes to the foundation of the mint at Massachusetts or …
