An incomplete cast lead-alloy steelyard weight dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is roughly bi-conical in form consisting of two unequally sized upper and lower hemispheres with a rounded circumferential ridge between them. A copper alloy band of 4mm width surrounds the circumference. The bottom section is smaller, and the base has been flattened either during production or at a later date. A flat silver ring. The age and function are unknown. The finder wondered if the object may be made from a coin, specifically an Elizabeth I Groat, Spink number 2551. Carl Savage, however, commented that the outer edge of the object did not look like the edge of a coin. An unknown object of unknown date and function. The object is a bow of copper alloy that is ovoid in section. At the foot the face appears machined, however the marks could be from casting. The 'face' of the object is trapezoidal and has an irregular shape with a possible zoomorphic shape - possibly a lion. A complete opaque globular annular glass bead of unknown date, Bronze Age to Modern, about 2200 BC to AD 1900, but most likely to be Roman or Early Medieval. The bead is made out of opaque light-blue glass. It is circular in shape, with convex sides, and the ends slightly flattened. It is annular and uneven, thicker at one side than the other. The coins were submitted as 9 loose coins and two clumps of coins concreted together with corrosion products. These were separated in the British Museum Conservation laboratory. Associated with the coins were seven artefacts. Massive terret ring made from cast cu-alloy, with an incomplete projection of a twin spur (lipped projection) within the ring. It would also have had a strap bar concealed at the base. Most known examples come from northern England and Scotland with an emphasis in Aberdeenshire. There are also examples from North Wales. It's very close to an example from Chesters, Northumberland in Jope 2000, 309, 291e and MacGregor 1976, 113. Generally dating from late 1st-mid 3rd century AD. The folowing report is from Martin Henig. "An attractive intaglio in a lower quality, base silver ring. The material of the stone is a non crystalline quartz, a chalcedony, with an upper blue layer and brownish ground, so it could be called a blue onyx or nicolo [ jewellery terms rather than scientific ones], the blue caused by staining/chemical treatment. The gem was cut with an outwardly bevelled edge. A lead sheet with the impression of a Roman coin. The coin impresion is of a Siliqua from the reign of Gratian (367-383) - Reece Period 19. The lead sheet is sub-rectaungular in plan and weighs 70.50g; is 56.23mm long; and has a maximum width of 34.07mm and a minimum width of 26.22mm. It is 4.91mm thick. The impression is situated at the widest part of the sheet and some dammage has occured to the upper right quadrant of the object, which includes part of the impression.
