Description: A complete gold finger ring, of 19th century date. The hoop of the ring has a twisted rope design around the entire diameter on its exterior face. The inside face of the hoop is plain, with no hallmarks. This design transitions directly into the bezel of the ring, which is a lozenge shape, into which a red stone is set into a quatrefoil opening. The bezel is a box design with chamfered edges. There is an apparent ‘lid’ for the box bezel, and it is possible that a keepsake is contained within the bezel itself. Dimensions:  Hoop diameter 22.28mm Weight: 5…

A complete but broken silver finger ring. The ring was first suspected to be Roman or early Medieval, from photographs only. The shoulder decoration certainly has some similarity to early Medieval zoomorphic decoration. However, on visual inspection and with reference to BM curators, the ring was ascribed a modern date,  Not Treasure, returned to finder

Complete copper-alloy belt and buckle style finger ring of post-medieval date (c. 1600 - 1800 AD). The ring is of simple design: a wide and flat band with a moulded bezel in the shape of a D-shaped buckle. The band has three dots, which presumably represent belt holes. the middle hole is not evenly spaced with the first and last dots. The inner face of the band is flat while the outer face is slightly convex, giving the finger ring a D-shaped section. There is no inscription. The finger ring has a rough brown surface with light green patches of copper-corrosion. It is 18.72 mm in diam…

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring, of probable Early Post Medieval dating (16th to 17th Centuries AD). The finger ring is of the signet ring style, with a raised rectangular bezel. The shoulders are plain and do not expand from the width of the hoop. The hoop is plain and D shaped in cross section and oval in plan. The device on the bezel has an elongated octagonal border which contains a trefoiled flower with two - possibly four - leaves. No direct comparison has been found. The finger ring measures 26.44 in diameter; 18.47mm wide from the bezel to the back edge of the hoop…

Description: Silver band-shaped finger-ring, with a large flat ovoid bezel, continuing as a tapering flat on either side of the centre, reducing to narrow, round wires at either end. These are looped around each other in short spirals to close the ring, and would originally have given some adjustability of size. Both the bezel and the tapering flanks are decorated with an unevenly repeated pattern of small circular punch-marks. A single line of these down the centre of the bezel is impressed more deeply. The ring is slightly flattened rather than completely round, and wider from side t…

The folowing report is from Martin Henig. "An attractive intaglio in a lower quality, base silver ring. The material of the stone is a non crystalline quartz, a chalcedony, with an upper blue layer and brownish ground, so it could be called a blue onyx or nicolo [ jewellery terms rather than scientific ones], the blue caused by staining/chemical treatment. The gem was cut with an outwardly bevelled edge. The subject is a cow, a popular subject from the Augustan period onwards, though I would date this to the late 1st century/first half of the 2nd century AD. Comparanda: see M.…

Description: An incomplete gold finger ring with a surface treatment of white enamel, dating from the late 16th to 17th Century AD. The ring has a D-shaped cross-section. The bezel has setting for three stones. Two subrectangular red stones - probably rubies - remain in their setting. The stones are facetted with a rectangular flat top and angled sides. A third central stone is missing and there are traces of white enamel in the socket where it would have been. The gold around each stone has been pressed around the top to hold it in place. The gold settings for the stones form a scall…

A post medieval gold finger ring with four faceted stones that may - or may not - be emeralds. A fifth socket, which presumably held a further stone, is empty. The four remaing stones are held by a claw style of mount. The ring has no inscription or maker's mark. The scroll-work of the bevel and shoulders, the faceting of the stones, and the claw mounts suggests a late Georgian or early Victorian date of manufature. While this find was reported as possible treasure, the decision of the relevant curator at the British Museum was that this is not treasure, due to the style of the rin…
