The folowing report is from Martin Henig. "An attractive intaglio in a lower quality, base silver ring. The material of the stone is a non crystalline quartz, a chalcedony, with an upper blue layer and brownish ground, so it could be called a blue onyx or nicolo [ jewellery terms rather than scientific ones], the blue caused by staining/chemical treatment. The gem was cut with an outwardly bevelled edge. The subject is a cow, a popular subject from the Augustan period onwards, though I would date this to the late 1st century/first half of the 2nd century AD. Comparanda: see M.…
