A copper alloy late-Iron Age to Roman (c.100 BC-AD c.200) end-looped cosmetic pestle ('woad grinder') from a cosmetic set.
The pestle terminates at one end with a coiled loop, with a clear seam where the coil rejoins the shaft.. The shaft is broadly rectangular in section with rounded edges. The edge of the shaft is flat on one side and swells to a distinct knife like 'belly' on the opposite edge and narrows to a blunt point. A copper-alloy Roman nummus, possibly a contemporary copy of Decentius (AD 351-353), dating to the period c.AD 351-353 (Reece period 18). SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES reverse type depicting a Chi-Rho between alpha and omega. Prototype of the mint of Trier. The slightly irregular die axis combined with a blundered reverse legend suggests this is likely a contemporary copy.
