A very worn copper-alloy Roman coin, possibly a contemporary copy ('limesfalsum') of an as or dupondius of uncertain 2nd century AD date, perhaps copying a coin of Marcus Aurelius as caesar (AD 139-161) or similar. Reverse type depicts Mars or the Emperor walking right holding transverse spear in right hand and trophy(?) in left, S [C] in the field. Cf. BMC p. 332, no. 1983 for a similar reverse type on an as or dupondius of Marcus Aurelius.

Description: A hoard of thirteen Roman silver coins. The group comprises seven denarii of the Roman Republic dating between 134-37 BC and a single denarius of Tiberius (AD 14-37), indicating a date for the hoard of no earlier than AD 14-37.
The original hoard contained eight coins, with an addition of two coins added 27.04.19. An addendum consistiong of three coins was recorded in 2023 bringing the current total to thirteen.

Circumstances of discovery
A hoard of Roman base silver coins was found during a metal detecting rally on arable land near Salisbury, Wiltshire, on August 19th 2018. The finders, upon realising that the hoard remained undisturbed within its original ceramic container, left the hoard in situ so that it could be examined archaeologically.
