Fragment of a marble sculpture of uncertain date, possibly Roman. The fragment is roughly oblong, with apparent breaks on all edges and is of inconsistent thickness. The front exhibits a female figure standing left, carved in high relief. The figure has an elaborate hairstyle consisting of a thick plait coiled across the forehead and tapering to the neck. Behind are four large transverse waves or plaits of hair. Between the plait and waves are a series of small waves and coils drawn back into a coiled bun at the nape of the neck. The face exhibits exaggerated, cartoonish features: a l…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Fragment of a lave stone quern of Roman to medieval date (c. AD 43 - 1300). Old breaks on all edges. The grinding surface has a series of radiating grooves engraved across the surface. Uncertain original diameter. This form of lava quern was imported into Britain, probably from Germany, from the Roman period to around the 13th century. They were commonly transported as ballast in unfinished form. It is, therefore, difficult to narrow down a date range. Use of querns was largely banned during the medieval period, however, their illegal use continued as did some use under license. …

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Almost complete upper stone from a Late Iron Age - Roman rotary quern of East Anglian type dating to the period c. AD 1 - 100. The stone is "bun-shaped" as is typical for quern stones of this type, the sides gently sloping to generate a broad conical profile with a rounded top which is somewhat damaged, although it is unclear whether this occurred during working, or subsequently. It exhibits a central conical perforation forming the hopper; the interior surface is well-worn. At the bottom of the hopper are the corroded remains of the iron spindle sleeve. The grinding surface has been …

Two fragments from a Roman Hertfordshire pudding stone quern dating to the period c. AD 43 - 409. D-shaped in cross-section, with traces of a central circular perforation for rotation, now 23mm in diameter. The bottom grinding surface has been worn smooth through use. The curved upper surface exhibits traces of a white substance, possibly mortar. This may indicate reuse as a building stone. Pudding stone is a conglomerate of pebbles held together in a natural cement of silica and sand.

Five fragments from at least three stone querns of Roman to medieval date. One fragment is curved on the inner edge, showing the position of the central perforation for rotation. Two fragments exhibit traces of engraved grooves on the grinding surface. This form of lava quern was imported into Britain, probably from Germany, from the Roman period to around the 13th century. They were commonly transported as ballast in unfinished form. It is, therefore, difficult to narrow down a date range. Incomplete rotary quern of Roman to medieval date. The fragment is semi-circular, with one transverse break and a series of old breaks around the curved edge. It is D-shaped in section and exhibits a series of incised grooves across the bottom surface. Due to the extent of damage it is not possible to state the original circumference. This form of lava quern was imported into Britain, probably from Germany, from the Roman period to around the 13th century. It is, therefore, difficult to narrow down a date range. Use of querns was largely banned during the medieval period, however,…
