A thick, heavy, cast copper-alloy lug from a Late Bronze Age cauldron, c. 1200-1100 BC. The object is strongly curved with moulded corrugated ribs as decoration, which flare outwards at one end. The underside of the thinner section has a break through a thick section of the copper alloy, where the lug would have attached beneath a rim clip to the vessel wall. Maximium thickness - 9.1mm, minimum thickness - 3.9mm. See similar examples on this database, including SUSS-8438EC and especially SF-832744, which retains some of the vessel wall (sheet bronze) and a suspension loop. In this reco…

A very worn Roman copper-alloy coin, probably a sestertius (from its weight) of Domitian (81-96). The reverse is completely worn, the obverse showing a right-facing bust. No inscription survives, and the mint is uncertain. Reece period 4 (Flavian). The obverse and reverse both exhibit round drill marks as if attempts were made to pierce the coin, although in neither case is a hole present. There are also three straight incised lines on the reverse on the coin, opposite the drill mark. These are angled in such a manner that they may intersect at the same point.  The wei…

An unusual cast copper-alloy bow brooch of either a continental or early British type. The head of bow is in the acanthus style, split head with rolled forward arms through which the hinged pin is located. The pin is of a different alloy and I suspect this has been replaced by the finder. Ridge high up on the reverse of the brooch. There maybe the start of the long catch-plate but the white substance seems odd - this needs looking at (addition / repair by the finder?). The brooch cannot be paralleled in Mackreth - the rolled forward arms are like those seen on the Hod Hill 'Durotri…

In the middle of the brooch is a central perforation with two concentric circles around it, now missing the stud insert. A tapering vertical panel is moulded down the centre of the bow, which has four sets of side lugs, the lowest set separating the panel with a thin tapering foot of the brooch with terminal knop and catch-plate on the reverse. A complete cast copper-alloy possible gaming piece of Roman date. The piece is in the form of a thick oval 'cube' with ring and dot decoration arranged 5-4-6-3 on its sides. There are no motifs on the top or base of the piece. In terms of date, both Roman and Saxon gaming pieces and weights commonly use the ring-and-dot motif as a decoration feature however of the few other examples recorded a Roman date seems more appropriate. This is a very rare object and comparisons are few; on this database the only comparable examples are NARC-CA76AF and DOR-672EC3, the latter having the …

An incomplete large and elaborate cast copper-alloy La Tène III or Nauheim derivative brooch dating to the late Iron Age or early Roman period. The brooch is a 'Giubiasco' type from Northern Italy (Bayey & Butcher 2004,57), which are usually dated to the first century BC. It is a rare find for Britain, with no other examples recorded by PAS (Sally Worrell, pers. comm July 2022). The one-piece brooch is formed from a long flattened bow of copper alloy, narrowing at the head into the spring coils, of which three survive. The fourth coil and the pin are broken and missi…

An bent and incomplete copper alloy 'Lowbury' style bow brooch, dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period c AD 25-60. The brooch is made from a single piece of copper alloy, with two loops of the spring being curled above the top of the bow.
