A complete lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain but probable Roman or medieval date. The spindle whorl is small, circular in plan and with a plano-convex in section. The central perforation is square at the top and circular underneath, and is slight very slightly off-centre. There are scratches in the lead on the top of the object while the underside is smooth and polished.

An incomplete copper alloy Roman surgical or toilet instrument ('spoon probe') dating from c. AD 100-300. The implement has an elongated spoon-like terminal with a ridge running along its length on the reverse. The terminal narrows to the shaft which has double collars either side of a bulbous swelling. The shaft is broken and missing. Crummy (Crummy, N 1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust) describes implements such as this as 'spoon-probes' and states that they are not a common site …

A copper-alloy probable finger ring bezel with traces of enamel of uncertain date. The bezel is oval in plan with a raised rim on one side. Internally there appears to be a degraded enamel of uncertain colour and form. Alternatively this may be the remains of a paste which secured an insert such as an intaglio in place. Roman (c.AD 43 to 409) probable iron hob nail: It has a hemi-sperical head and a square incomplete shank. It measures 11.78mm, 9.17mm and weighs 0.65g. Hobnails were used in Roman footwear, boots and sandals (caligae) were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper sole, lamina and the insole, all three layers were clenched together with hobnails, frequently arranged in patterns, some of which were created to facilitate comfortable walking (Bishop and Coulston: 1993).

A bent but complete pair of copper-alloy tweezers, probably from the Roman period (AD 43-410), but could date up until the Early Medieval period (c. AD 800). The tweezers are formed from a single rectangluar sectioned band of copper-alloy which has been bent in half, creating a sprung loop one end. It consists of two arms extending from the loop, both of which gradually become wider apart from each other as they curve out.
