A gold Iron Age stater of Catti of the Dobunni tribe dating to c. AD 1 - 20. Obverse depicts the Tree of Life and the reverse depicts triple tailed horse above a wheel. The inscription 'CATTI' is visible on the reverse. The Dobunni were an Iron Age tribe with a range of rulers. Often rulers had similar coins but changed specific details. The details changed include: shape of the horse's head; the obverse type; the number of pellets surrounding the horse; the inscription above the horse. A copper alloy contemporary copy of an as of Caligula (AD 37-41) (Reece Period 1), struck in honour of Marcus Agrippa (died 12 BC), S C, Neptune standing left. Prototype Mint of Rome - RIC I, p. 112, no. 58. For a copy, see Boon, Counterfeit Coins in Roman Britain, plate III, no. 36. A number of these copies have been found recently on the excavations at the Bloomberg Site in London (Julian Bowsher, pers. comm.). The coin appears to have been serrated which is a phenomenon noted by Dr Philippa Walton has noted on coins from Piercebridge.
