A complete silver medieval finger ring dating to c. AD 1350-1500. The object is composed of a circular band with a flattened integral, rectangular bezel and tapering rectangular shoulders. The internal face of the band is undecorated but shows signs of wear and production. The shoulders and bezel of the outer face have intricate decoration. The shoulders have a rectangular pellet border along each edge, interupted 3.67mm from the bezel by two raised crosses. A copper alloy contemporary copy of an as of Caligula (AD 37-41) (Reece Period 1), struck in honour of Marcus Agrippa (died 12 BC), S C, Neptune standing left. Prototype Mint of Rome - RIC I, p. 112, no. 58. For a copy, see Boon, Counterfeit Coins in Roman Britain, plate III, no. 36. A number of these copies have been found recently on the excavations at the Bloomberg Site in London (Julian Bowsher, pers. comm.). The coin appears to have been serrated which is a phenomenon noted by Dr Philippa Walton has noted on coins from Piercebridge.
