An incomplete early post-medieval (1500-1700) copper-alloy book clasp, a hook piece with minor damage to the terminal expansion, and a missing rivet. It retains one corroded iron rivet c. 3 mm in diameter, in situ, at the terminal end. The clasp is formed from a thin rectangular strip of metal with one squared off end, beyond which a flat, rounded-end curved hook projects (2.9 mm wide, but tapering along its length), and the splayed terminal to the other. The plate of the mount is sub-triangular with the top of the plate measuring 8.8 mm in width, whilst the bottom is 2.7 mm across. A triangular shaped mark measuring 3.1 mm in length has been cut into the top of the plate, giving a slightly cusped appearance. An ovoid shaped depression measuring 5.5 by 2.5 mm travels across the width of the plate c. 8.9 mm above the bottom; this appears to be loss of surface treatment. The plate is 1.9 mm in thickness. On the reverse the integral po…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BC) gold or gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring, oval in cross-section with irregularly shaped hollow area at the centre of each terminal. One of the terminals has a chip of metal missing at the edge. The terminals are not perfectly aligned, giving the impression that the object is ever-so-slightly twisted. It is not possible to be entirely certain whether the ring was solid gold or a copper alloy core wrapped in gold sheet (as occurs in several instances). There are no signs of the copper alloy corrosion that can accompany the latter scenario.

An undateable copper-alloy solidified droplet. The droplet has almost divided in two during formation, so that there is one large blob and a smaller blob. A central longitudinal groove running part way along the reverse of the droplet indicates that it formed whilst resting on another object, which would suggest that it formed as a by product of metalworking. The droplet is mostly grey-black in colour, although the groove is orange-brown. The droplet measures 12.8mm x 8.1m before decreasing to 8.4mm x 4.2mm, and increasing again for the smaller element 9.2mm x 5.2mm. The overall lengt…
