A complete lead or lead alloy convex spindle whorl, of the Roman to Post Medieval period, dating from c.AD 43 - c.AD 1650.
The spindle whorl is broadly oval in form, and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is broadly circular in shape and has been cast slightly off centre. The internal diameter of the hole measures roughly 6.5 mm wide, (the base of the hole appears wider, and 11.8 mm). The upper face is domed and the lower face is flat. The object is cylindrical in form and circular in section. There is a broadly circular perforation running the length of the object, (inner diameter of 6.8 mm), the perforation is slightly off centre. The top of the object is flat, and the base is at a slight angle, there also appears to be a circumferential groove around the perforation at the base of the object. An incomplete lead alloy papal bulla, probably of Pope Innocent III (c. AD 1161 - AD 1216), dating to the period AD 1198 - AD 1216, when he held the papacy.
The obverse bears an inscription of INNO/CENTIVS/PP III, split into three lines, identifying it as a bulla of Pope Innocent III. There is the remains of a pellet border around the inscription, bulla as been cast slightly off centre. PP in the inscription stands for pastor pastorum - Shepherd of the shepherds.

The object is incomplete, only the two inner discs and the strip remain. The outer discs are missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The object comprises of two broadly circular discs with a rectangular strip between the two. The strip has been folded almost completely in half. The discs each show evidence of old breaks at one end of each, this would be where the two outer discs would have been. The object is broadly spherical and has presumably been cast however, no casting flanges are present. The ball has been flattened in some areas, which may be the result of impact; the surface has several scrapes throughout and a number of deep gouges over the surface.
The object measures 27.6 mm (1.09 inch) in diameter and is 25.9 mm in height. It weighs 63.0 g (2.22 oz).

The seal is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in section. The seal is made of two discs connected with a strip. One disc has a rivet which protrudes through the hole in the other rivet. The whirligig consists of a flat disc of sheet lead or lead alloy metal, with a serrated edge. The toy has two string holes which are circular in shape and drilled from both sides. Originally twenty six (26) triangular spokes/teeth were present. All have been worn down and have rounded points.
